چکیده

Previous studies on the physiological aspects of violacein biosynthesis (DeMoss and Evans, 1959) suggested that only L-tryptophan would serve as the primary source of carbon for pigment formation by Chromobacterium violaceum. In view of the pigment structure suggested by Ballantine et al. (1958), 5-[3-(5-hydroxyindolyl)]-3-(3-isatinyl)-2-pyrrolone, it seemed advisable to determine the actual source of the pigment carbon, and to determine if the pyrrolone residue is formed via an independent metabolic pathway. The data presented suggest that tryptophan is probably the sole precursor of violacein carbon; furthermore, the formation of the pyrrolone moiety is a process involving tryptophan metabolism and does not involve the mediation of the glycine-suceinate pathway for pyrrole synthesis described by Shemin (1955).

The synthesis of radioactive cholesterol and fatty acids in vitro.

It has been established that rat liver slices are able to convert acetate (l), acetone (2), pyruvate (3, 4), butyrate, hexanoate, and octanoate (4) to cholesterol and long chain fatty acids. Zabin and Bloch (5) and Price and Rittenberg (6) administered 1 ,3-C14-acetone to rats and demonstrated that it is converted to fatty acids and cholesterol. The former investigators (5) also reported that m...

Incorporation of Radioactive Acetate and Sucrose into Amino Acids and Protein of Excised Organs of Red Kidney Bean.

Little information is available on rates of incorporation of C14-labeled amino acids into plant protein. The first reported work was that of Arreguin, Bonner and Wood (1) in 1951 in which C14-carboxvl-labeled acetate was supplied to guayule plants. The bulk of the radioactivity in the protein fraction was located in leucine, glutamate and aspartate. Boroughs and Bonner (4) incubated C14-carboxy...

Incorporation of Radiolabelled Substrates into Mycobacteri- al Lipids of M. Bovis BCG and M. Kansasii

Background: Diseases caused by microorganisms of the genus Mycobacterium continue to be a serious problem. The cell envelope constitutes up to 60% of the dry weight of lipids. The cell wall of the mycobacterium is essential for their growth and survival in the infected host. The cell wall lipids have been isolated from M. bovis BCG and M. kansasii mycobacterial strains and studied the incorpora...

The biosynthesis of radioactive fatty acids and cholesterol.

The biological synthesis of long chain fatty acids from acetate by slices of rat liver tissue was demonstrated by Bloch, Borek, and Rittenberg (1) in 1946, and has been repeated by several investigators (2, 3). The effect of insulin on this incorporation was studied by Bloch and Kramer (2), who reported that, whereas insulin inhibited the incorporation of labeled acetate into fatty acids, the c...

Fat metabolism in higher plants. I. Biogenesis of higher fatty acids by slices of peanut cotyledons in vitro.

Although considerable research has been conducted in recent years on the mechanisms of fatty acid synthesis and oxidation in animal tissues (1) and in microorganisms (2), no similar studies of higher plants have yet been reported, despite the great importance of fat-storing seeds and fruits in the economy of nature and the value to comparative biochemistry of an understanding of fatty acid biog...
